So I was thinking about this today and I'm curious what everyone thinks. Do you think America needs more gun control? And why or why not?

I think that we don't need more gun control for the simple reason that once you start taking guns away from citizens they become targets.

I think everyone has a right to have guns...but I really don't think anyone needs full auto or assault weapons.  So I am for gun control to an extent. Keep in mind, the second amendment was written at a time when nobody could imagine the type of weaponry available to a 'common man'.

Well of course we don't all need auto or assault weapons, but I do enjoy mine. I also think the castle law here in Texas was good idea, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah. Texas.....

I think Castle Doctrines are fine. But even those have room for improvement. Many of these laws make it okay to 'shoot to kill' and chalk it up to 'justifiable homicide'. Dead men can't make it to court.

I think something created for the purpose of ending a life should be controlled WAY more than it is. I think no one should have the right to have a gun, only for the purpose of law enforcement. And of course there's things like hunting, but I think facilities should get permits to have guns on their premises and each gun is rented out for so long and closely monitored and if it goes missing it's immediately reported...stuff like that. There's too many innocent lives lost. I don't know if you guys have ever heard of Oakland, CA but it's in the bay area luckily far away from me haha but there's so much crime and so many stray bullets. Something happened just last week where a woman was sitting in her car and got shot, same with an old man walking down the street. What could we possibly need so badly from owning a gun? Is that something that is being fulfilled, greater than the fact that we're willing to let these innocent people be sacrificed?

You know, criminals love gun control. It makes their job safer. Wink But seriously, why would a criminal bother to obey gun control laws? Criminals find ways to get what they want, whether its outlawed or not. Also the firearm is THE ONLY piece of personal property specifically guaranteed NOT to be regulated by the government in the U.S. Constitution.

Oh boy... Grin

Well coming from Europe I do believe in gun control. We have pretty strict laws in Germany (and after some school shootings with Columbine as a role model) politicians discussed about an even stricter one (I didn't think that was possible).
And let me tell you, it works! Hence I cannot accept the argument "only criminals would have guns then". Here, they don't! And I'm not talking about a real, organized cime, Mafia criminal, of course those guys do have guns. But you don't usually meet those people on the street, and if you do you wouldn't know about it.
The average outlaw, the type that robs you on the street or wants to beat you up, probably only has a knife as the only weapon. You usually don't have to be afraid to get shot, it's simply not an issue here.

And if something like that happens, it's in the news all over the country because it happens so rarely. I can't explain why, but gun control do works, because I see it every day.

However I understand that this is a very touchy subject in the US. So that's just my opinion as a European Wink

NO MA'AM

i don't own a gun (yet) because my wife is against it.  i like having the freedom to purchase and own one if i choose.  i also wouldn't mind a long wait for a background check and a cool-down period.  i like laws that punish the people (friends, girlfriends, etc.) that supply guns to criminals for the same crime that criminal might commit.  i think regulation is a good thing.  most people i know with guns (not all - don't get offended) aren't the brightest folks (this is for most people in general - not just with guns).  people voted for bush over kerry SOLELY because "we'z don't won't heeum to take arrr gunz away-ee".  they tried to do the same with obama.  thank all that's holy the kids came out to vote in droves.

hey now, don't start with the political stuff. And yeah, a little regulation isn't a terrible thing, I just don't want my guns taken away I won't have my guns taken away.
