The hot new Palm Pixi which is very similar to the new iPhone will go on sale in Australia in August with Telstra snaring an exclusive three month contract say Telstra insiders.
Confirming the release of the new Palm Pixi in Australia Palm Country Manager Brett Murray said that their new phone will be released in the second half of 2009 however he would not confirm an exclusive deal with Telstra who are also tipped to have cut an exclusive deal to get the new HTC Google G2 Android phone.

Murray also said that he did not anticipate any patent problems with Apple over the design of the new Pixi which has an operating system very similar to the Apple 3G iPhone.

In Australia the Palm Pixi is set to go head to head with Smartphone offerings from HTC, Blackberry and Apple. It is also anticipated that Telstra's marketing machine who are set to be responsible for all Palm marketing is set to limit supply initally.

In the USA the phone is tipped to go on sale on June 7th with Best Buy stores only getting one phone per store.

According to research group iSuppli the new phone costs around $US170 to make. ISuppli expects Palm will try to sell the Pixi to Telstra for about $400 who will then add their margin with the product then being sold on a plan for around $299 or Outright for $899.

The iSuppli analysis of $US170 build cost does not include shipping, logistics, marketing and other channel costs, the group said.

"The similarity in features between the Pixi and the iPhone clearly reveals the mark Palm is trying to hit," iSuppli analyst Tina Teng of iSuppli said.

"The use of a multi-touch screen -- a key allure of the iPhone -- and Palm's innovative WebOS operating system, are likely to allow the Pixi to appeal to a broad range of consumers."

The Pixi is seen as Palm's best hope to fight rivals such as the iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry, which have hurt Palm's Smartphone sales in recent years.

Dunno but it does kinda get under my skin that everyone has pricing and dates except for the launch of the phone!

I mean come on! The Pixi is supposed to launch within about a month and a half, yet they can't tell us anything specific. But the GSM version has a date and the Eos which they haven't even officially announced has a pricing and expected date...

Well I think part of the problem is Sprint.  They wanted to build up the hype and keep people guessing.  I wonder if it will back fire on them.  I still think the Iphone will steal the show during WWDC in June.  Do you think the Pixi will have more interest than the 3rd generation Iphone that has a 50% market share?  Epsecially if they have more up their sleeve than what they revealed in the march 17 3.0 debut. I think Palm/Sprint blew it launching the month of WWDC.  It should have been launched in April so the Pixi buzz would have been out for a while.  I talk to most cell phone users and no one has even heard of the Pixi and do not care.  Only us fanatics are the only ones interested.

I dunno. I mean I know the Pixi is going to be a great product. Maybe them launching the phone close to the new iPhone is a good thing... for us.

Think about it. If all the attention is on the iPhone and everyone is busy buying those we can get out Pixis worry free!

Haha I dunno just random thought. It's late!

I must have a pathetic life.  Up late discussing a phone that isn't even out yet or haven't even touched yet...Oh well!

Yes maybe it is a good thing, but they need to sell a ton of them if we are going to get developers to design software for them.  From what I hear almost every developer conference is filled with OS X developers.  Why would they design for WebOS if it only sells 30 thousand phones when they have a million plus already out there.  Plus, people may not bite yet since it is on Sprint.  I like Sprint but alot of people I talk to wouldn't touch Sprint and would wait for something on their platform....Just a thought

EDIT: BTW, you need to fix the link you have to find out when the release date is.  I click on it and nothing happens   laugh

Haha trust me I know. It's suicide for the company. I was saying earlier Apple could probably release the same iPhone 3G from last year just in different colors and the common person would pick it over the Pixi.

Maybe the Pixi will be a cult classic? 20 years from now it will be what the Beta Max was to the VHS! laugh

That is what I want, a phone that is "cult" status.  We can start attending pre conventions in the future and talk about the "what ifs" that could have made Pixi a successful platform.  What if it wasn't launched on Sprint?  What if it came out sooner?  What if it was from another company but palm.  yes, then it could have taken off.  We can all play with the 30 apps that was created for it and trade ideas how to "hack" the phone to run some old Iphone apps from the past.
