I have finally made some progress learning about using some patches while in root!!!  Everything I have done so far has worked great - call times, add/delete pages, showing all-day events in the month view of the calendar, and enabling wide view of emails.  The only problem I have come across is with changing the boot logos.  I believe it is due to the fact that the first time I ran through the procedure I failed to name the new files correctly.  Now when I try and go through the procedure again I come to a prompt w/in putty asking if I want to overwrite the files (at least that is what I think the prompt means - there is a "?" at the end of it) and don't know how to respond.  How do I answer in the affirmative?  I tried "y" and "yes" and continued through the steps but the logo is still the same (which seems weird because when I look at the files on the phone via usb hookup the logos are not even there!).  Any help would be much appreciated.

right after you gained root access to you pre, did you do this step: mount -o remount, rw / to mount your pre as a read and write?

if i recall correctly you should perform that step before you even being pasting the commands, and you should perform this step: mount -o remount, ro / before you reboot your pre.

the first thing i did after gaining root access was this:

mkdir /media/internal/bootlogo
cp /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo* /media/internal/bootlogo

then i changed the logos and did this:

sudo mount -o rw,remount /
sudo cp -ip /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo.png /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo.png.orig
sudo cp -ip /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo-bright.png /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo-bright.png.orig
sudo cp /media/internal/bootlogo/palm-logo.png /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo.png
sudo cp /media/internal/bootlogo/palm-logo-bright.png /usr/palm/sysmgr/images/palm-logo-bright.png
sudo mount -o ro,remount /

does that look right to you?

it looks correct. i would suggest you run the whole process again. this time, have your web browser open to this youtube video:http://www.youtube.com/user/hotrock85#play/uploads/5/L-Oyt0JZi6Q

i suggest you play that video at the same time you performing the procedure, to make sure you ar not missing any step.

also have this web page open: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Boot_Themes

hope it helps

OK, I could not let it alone and have been trying to figure out what is going on.  If when I look at the files on my Pixi via USB and in the bootlogo folder are different pictures than the phone is using during booting, what the heck is going on?Huh?  I have tried this over and over again to no avail.  Please help or I may go insane! laugh

Good. I knew you would figure it out, that's why i didn't reply to your previous cry for help Wink...you just seemed to know what you were doing.

A little tip for next time though: always double check your work when you are rooting, to make sure everything is okay.

Just remember every time you connect your Pixi to do hacks you need to remount the filesystem and read/write, even if the instructions for the hack do not tell you to do so. Every time you end the novacom connection it reverts back to read only. Smiley

Also there is no need to manually set it back to read only.
